Celebrate Banned Books Week!

Writer: DavidDavid

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

The American Library Association's Banned Books Week happens this year from September 27-October 3.

Banned Books Week is a very important holiday for those of us here at Drag Story Hour Arizona. The majority of the books on the list of Most Challenged Books for 2019 were challenged at least in part for LGBTQIA+ content. They include Drag Story Hour favorites such as A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, Prince & Knight, I Am Jazz, and And Tango Makes Three, George, and Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out.

We must continue to fight the idea that a book including LGBTQIA+ characters and stories makes it "inappropriate" and work to include stories so that LGBTQIA+ young people seem themselves reflected in the books they read, and all young people are exposed to a diversity of perspectives.

Here at Drag Story Hour Arizona, we kicked off Banned Books Week early with a Banned Books Story Hour on Saturday, September 19. And we will have another Banned Books Story Hour on October 3 with King Keo Llewellyn.

Join us then!
